On the 11th of March 2016, three members of the local fire brigade visited our school. They spoke to every class about fire safety and how to prevent fires in the home. Ger, one of the fire officers, explained to each class the need for smoke alarms in the home and the importance of having an escape route in the event of a fire. Tony spoke about how fires can happen accidentally, for example leaving fireplaces unattended and lit cigarettes lying around.
Each class had the opportunity to view the equipment and gear the fire fighters use. Tony wore the breathing apparatus and uniform while Ger explained why each component is crucial for a fire fighters safety.
Some of our older classes were very lucky and had the chance to see some of the equipment that the fire service uses in the case of a car accident.
Special thanks to Ger Doyle, Eddie Coleman and Tony Tallon.
