Break for the Border Fundraiser raises €8’000 for St Joseph’s NS

20181207_104442The annual Break for the Border was a huge success as over 400 people turned out for race. Participants of all ages ran, walked, jogged from Hacketstown towards Tinahely breaking the Carlow Wicklow border. Over 50 volunteers from Hacketstown helped on the day and they were amazing and over 40 local businesses sponsored the event, including O’Reilly’s Londis who also provided the much need refreshments.

The event was well attended by running clubs from across Carlow and Wicklow, with Carlow coming out on top as winners. Larry Murphy, Tinryland AC won the men’s 10km, Aisling Kirwin won the women’s 10km, Colin Payne, Tinryland AC won the men’s 5km and Grace Reilly from Portlaoise AC won the women’s 5km.

The morning of the race was a hive of activity as music blared the streets welcoming everyone to the event. Upon completion of the race, participants received an exclusive Break for the Border medal and were treated to a feast of home baked goods and hot cup of tea before heading home. The atmosphere and the weather was great providing a super opportunity for everyone to hang around and enjoy their achievement.

St Joseph’s NS Principal, Doireann Hester comments, “The wonderful spirit and care that members of the wider community have for the children of Hacketstown was hugely evident over the past number of weeks in the organisation of this event. Every sponsor contributed to this and is part of the education of the next generation of young people. The funds raised by this event will contribute to the upkeep of the school over the coming year and will hopefully enrich the experience of the children who are students here. We were delighted with the huge turn out.  The day was a great success and was enjoyed by all.”

Next year’s Break for the Border will take place on Sunday 22nd September. Save the date!
